Want to teach awesome students in a friendly, creative place?

Pathfinder Guitar (established 2015), one of the highest-rated private guitar schools in Melbourne (according to Google reviews), is looking for an experienced contemporary piano teacher to build and run their new piano school due to high demand.

Whilst the client has the in-house capabilities to manage the administrative side of lessons, they really need someone who:

  • Wants to develop a new, practical and effective method to teach piano based on their experience

  • Wants full autonomy and support to change the way students learn piano!

In this role, you'll initially be working alongside the Head Instructor to build coursework, teach a small number of students and expand from there. Based on the success of the school, this could then lead to managing other piano teachers.

In addition to this, depending on your interests and experience, there's potential to also handle:

  • Social Media

  • Administration

  • Marketing

  • Guitar Teaching

  • Guitar repairs & maintenance

  • Musical equipment sales and rental

A few notes about Pathfinder:

  • Almost all of their lessons are run in small groups based on age and skill level.

  • They have structured lesson plans, with plenty of flexibility for teachers to adapt it and deliver it their way.

  • Many of their students attend multiple lessons per week, and everyone at least once a week, so their students tend to be a lot more motivated than average.

  • Get paid for the hours you're at work, so don't worry about student absences affecting your income.

  • Similarly, they operate 50 weeks per year, so you'll still be employed over most holidays (and when you do want a break for holidays, tours, gigs etc, they try to be as flexible as possible).

  • And finally, they try to innovate! If you have ideas on better ways to teach, you'll be given the freedom to try them and pass them on to the rest of the team.

Hours & Pay

This role is initially budgeted for 5-15 hours per week depending on availabilities and preference. As the school grows, or if you'd like to take on greater responsibilities, the client would be happy to discuss ways for you to progress.

Their normal operating hours are Monday - Thursday 4pm-9pm and Saturdays 10am-2pm, but they do occasionally run events outside of these hours.

Payment rates will depend on whether you'd prefer to contract hourly or receive a share of profits, but would likely range from $25-$35 per hour plus super.

Perks

  • Personal and career development - in particular, the client has in-house expertise in recording, administration, accounting/finance, marketing and events.

  • Use of studio for rehearsals outside of teaching hours.

  • Be treated as an equal - they’re a very small team and are open to new ideas and input, and they want lots of collaboration between piano and guitar teachers and students.

About You

You must have:

  • Bachelors, AMus or LMus level music qualification or higher

  • Currently work as a performing musician (some flexibility granted due to current climate, but all of their Senior Teachers are required to be active in the industry)

  • Have a variety of teaching experiences, including groups, kids and adults of different skill levels

Whilst they predominantly teach contemporary styles, they’re open to having a bit of diversity in the team, so we encourage applicants to be honest and tell us what you love!

Their studio is located in Ringwood, Victoria. You'll be 'reporting' directly to the owner/head instructor and will work alongside their guitar teachers, who will be able to assist you in building the coursework and managing students (they aren't really fans of hierarchies - it's a team).
